Worth seeing
Invitation to history, nature and culture
Stollberg in the Ore Mountains is rich in fascinating historical buildings that make a visit unforgettable. Hoheneck Castle towers over the town, visible from afar. Originally used as a Saxon "women's prison", it later became sadly famous as the largest women's prison in the GDR. Today, it opens its doors as a museum, the Phänomenia interactive experience and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the history of the building on guided tours (by prior arrangement).
Also worth seeing are the town hall and the Gothic St. Jakobi church, which dominate the skyline of Stollberg and offer an insight into the town's historical architecture. The small Catholic St. Mary's Church impresses with its valuable altar and invites visitors to take a moment of silence and reflection.
The Carl-von-Bach-Gymnasium is another of the city's architectural gems. The Art Nouveau building houses an auditorium worth seeing with impressive murals by Otto Fritzsche. Although the building is normally only accessible to students and teachers, visitors can take a look at this historic site on public occasions such as choir performances and theater productions.
All in all, these historic buildings offer a fascinating insight into the rich history and culture of our city. Discover the unique architecture and experience the past up close in this charming city.
